The EMEA VALORANT powerhouse G2 Gozen defeated Shopify Rebellion in a thrilling final match to win the inaugural VCT Game Changers Championship.

The top eight female VALORANT teams from around the world competed together in Berlin, Germany, but only one team stood out as the Game Changers Champions. After going through a highly competitive double-elimination bracket, only Shopify Rebellion and G2 Gozen survived to compete in the grand finals.

The best-of-five final series was also a nail-biter that came down to the wire as G2 pulled off a reverse sweep and won the Game Changers trophy with a 3-2 victory.  Shopify Rebellion initially had the advantage, winning the first two maps, Pearl and Bind. However, G2 overturned the odds by taking Ascent, Icebox, and the pivotal map Breeze. Without dropping a single series during this competition, the EMEA powerhouse G2 Gozen becomes the first female VALORANT world champions.

G2 Gozen’s Journey In VCT Game Changers

G2 Gozen were unquestionably the audience favourite despite entering the competition as the second EMEA seed. The team have exceeded every expectations and dominated the rivals throughout the competition. In the first round, the team handily trounced X10 Sapphire 2-10, setting up the much awaited showdown with Cloud9 White. It was finally time for G2 Gozen and Cloud9 White to face off in one of the biggest women's VALORANT tournaments in history. With six Game Changers titles under their belt, C9 White have been a dominant force in the North America VALORANT scene. Since its debut in July 2021, the team has only lost a single Game Changers match to Shopify Rebellion, except for the forfeit game versus Immortals.

During the EMEA versus NA showdown, G2 Gozen lost the first map against C9 but then won the second and third maps to win the best-of-three series. G2 kept up the momentum and defeated Team Liquid Brazil 2-0 to go to the Grand Final. To become the inaugural VCT Game Changers winners, they only needed one more victory, and Shopify Rebellion GC were the only ones standing in their way. After being demoted to the lower bracket by Team Liquid Brazil, Shopify wreaked havoc on all of their opponents as they battled their way to the title showdown. On their road to the grand finals, they trounced X10 and Cloud9 White before exacting revenge on Liquid.

The Ultimate Showdown

On Pearl, the turbocharged best-of-five series began, and G2 quickly took the lead. Before halftime, the North American team immediately retaliated to tie the game at 6-6. Shopify kept up the momentum and won six straight rounds to finish 12-6. Even though G2 managed to win a couple more rounds to reduce Shopify's lead, it was too late for a comeback as the North American side secured one more round to seal the deal with a 13-9 victory.

Shopify chose Bind as the second map in the series, but despite their best efforts, G2 controlled the first half of the game. In a battle that quickly turned into a stalemate, Kayla "flowerful" Horton and Benita "bENITA" Novshadian secured six consecutive rounds for the North American team to win back-to-back maps. When Shopify was only one map away from winning, G2 unexpectedly shifted from a defensive to an attacking strategy, which caused a significant boost in their performance.

G2 chose Ascent to lead their comeback, and their dominance on the map was evident in the 13-3 result. The key players in G2's comeback were Petra "Petra" Stoker and Michaela "mimi" Lintrup, who combined for 41 kills on the map. The European team had already boarded the momentum train and never looked back. They won easily 13-2 on Icebox to advance the best-of-five series to the decisive map, Breeze.

G2 Gozen had a real advantage going into Breeze since the team had never lost the map in over a year. The European team exhibited outstanding defense on the map, which enabled them to finish the first half with a commanding 9-3 lead. While everyone anticipated that G2 would succumb to a 9-3 curse, the team promptly destroyed it by winning the map 13-5 to complete the first VCT Finals reverse sweep. In the last three maps, G2 battled their way back from 0-2 down to take the series 3-2. The team's coordinated and composed play, in combination with Julia's careful decisions, led them to become the first female VALORANT world champions.
